Inim Fire is the App that simplifies acoustic measurements for voice evacuation and public address systems

The design of EVAC systems is regulated by legislation which imposes a series of measurements and tests to evaluate the acoustic characteristics of the system and the ambient where it is installed. These operations require specific tools and skills, often expensive and difficult to find.

The Inim Fire App includes dedicated audio tools capable of simplifying and optimizing the measurements and tests required by legislation, without need of using expensive tools.

What the legislation requires

The reference legislation for the EVAC sector requires the sector professional to carry out the following measurements and tests:

• Measurement of the reverberation time of each Acoustically Distinguishable Area in the 500Hz, 1000Hz and 2000Hz octave bands

• Measurement of the environmental noise level of each Acoustically Distinguishable Area for octave bands from 125Hz to 8KHz measured in a period of not less than 10 seconds

• Acoustic pressure level of A-weighted, Time-weighting F (Fast) alarm messages in a 60 second time span

• STIPA measurement (Speech Transmission Index Public Addressing), index between 0 and 1, represents the intelligibility of acoustic messages

With the Inim Fire App it is possible to carry out all these measurements easily and effectively directly from a smartphone

The Inim Fire App provides a simple calibration process capable of calibrating the response of the Smartphone microphone and providing the most reliable measurement* possible. In this way your smartphone becomes your sole reference tool for carrying out the acoustic measurements required by legislation.

*The measurements provided by the Inim Fire App are indicative as Smartphones do not have precise calibration capabilities. The calibration process offered by the App adapts the Smartphone microphone in such a way as to make the measurement as reliable as possible.

MEASUREMENT OF THE AMBIENT NOISE LEVEL. Start the measurement and the App will proceed to acquire ambient noise via the Smartphone microphone for 15 seconds. Once the acquisition is complete, the signal will be processed, applying the appropriate filters in accordance with the provisions of the legislation. Finally, the value in dBA averaged over the sampling time will be returned.

REVERBERATION TIME MEASUREMENT (RT MEASUREMENT). Start the measurement and the App will activate the Smartphone microphone for ambient sound detection. Emit a short, loud noise, suitable for the ambient size (e.g. clap hands) to start the measurement process automatically. The App will calculate the reverberation time, that is, how long it takes for the sound to decrease by 60dB, indicating the acoustic comfort of the ambient. The App will show the reverberation time in seconds in 500Hz, 1000Hz and 2000Hz frequency bands and its average value.

MEASUREMENT OF ACOUSTIC PRESSURE LEVEL OF ALARM MESSAGES. The App measures the acoustic pressure of the alarm messages by playing them on the speakers in the audio zone being tested and by sampling the audio signal for 60 seconds. After processing, applying the weighting curves and the envisaged filters, it returns the value in dBA averaged over the sampling time. By means of the App it is possible to adjust volumes and equalization of the amplifiers assigned to the audio zone being tested and check the acoustic values reached in real time, without having to access the control panel display.

STIPA MEASUREMENT (Speech Transmission Index Public Addressing). STIPA is an index that represents the intelligibility of the acoustic signals reproduced by the system with values ranging from 0 to 1. The App automatically starts the audio signal necessary for the measurement on the speakers of the audio zone being tested, using a pink noise contained in the fire control panel memory and obtained from the sum of modulated frequencies. Simultaneously, the App captures the audio signal for 15 seconds. After a processing phase, applying digital filters to the sampled signal, the STIPA value is calculated and returned. The legislation requires an optimal STIPA level above 0.5. The App issues a warning when the measured value approaches the minimum limit.
